Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira may well be heartbroken about letting down the side but at least he's not broke - having pocketed more than R20million during his time with Bafana Bafana.
There are jobs where "jumping ship" is just not possible. An example of such an occupation is the captain of a ship.
Given his huge income, an alternative for him would have been frequent short trips back home to visit his family.
His assistant coaches could have carried on and there would have been continuity.
I sympathise with Parreira, but at the same time I know that many people are compelled to continue with their work no matter how grave the crisis at home. Such examples are to be found in South Africa.
We will never know if Parreira is truly heartbroken or, as he boards the plane, his thoughts are: "I'm sure glad to be rid of that lot".
