Mokgodutswane Mabel Mokhadi (nee Masetle), a stalwart of the Azanian People's Organisation (Azapo) and the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM), has passed on.
"Zala" as she was fondly known, was a dedicated member of the stronghold of the BCM and Azapo - the township of Bekkersdal on the West Rand.
She had been ill for some time after surviving two strokes recently and succumbed to a third on April 6. Azapo and other BCM structures in Gauteng and throughout the country feel a deep sense of loss at this time because she was like the legendary "Rock of Gibraltar" during the turbulent 1980s.
This goes back to resistance against apartheid and during the infamous Azapo-UDF feud.
Zala is survived by her husband, Joseph Mokhadi, a son, five daughters, her father and two sisters.
She will be buried at Bekkersdal tomorrow after a service at Paul Nel Hall from 7am.
