In 2006 Pastor Chris was embroiled in controversy when his brother, Kenneth Oyakhilome, and another preacher were accused of offering SABC's head of religious services, Solly Mabelane, R50000 to renew a TV advertising campaign the station had canned.
Kenneth, the leader of the church's Randburg branch, appeared in the Newlands magistrates' court in Johannesburg on corruption charges.
The money allegedly came from Pastor Chris as "a gift". Kenneth at the time insisted he had no idea what was in the plain envelope he handed the SABC executive. Kenneth was acquitted on the corruption charges.
The study by the University of Pretoria titled "Piety and profit: accounting for money in West African Pentecostalism" says Pastor Chris founded Believers Loveworld from Edo state in Nigeria. He studied architecture at the University of Benin and worked for the banking sector for a while before moving to Lagos, where he started the church.
