Thieves gunned down a 31-year-old man in Umlazi, Durban, after robbing him of his wallet , police said yesterday .

Police spokesman Khephu Ndlovu said the murder took place on Monday evening.

The deceased, Mandla Mazubane, was walking along a gravel road with his girlfriend when a red car approached them.

Ndlovu said the car, with two occupants, stopped and an armed man got out and demanded the couple hand over their wallets.

Mazubane handed over his wallet containing R110 and his girlfriend also handed hers which had R40.

Before fleeing the the gunman shot his Mazubane in the stomach.

Mazubane was declared dead on arrival at Prince Mshiyeni Hospital, in Umlazi.
