The rate of pupil absenteeism in South African schools is much lower compared to that of other African countries, a recent study has found.

"A study into pupil absenteeism, commissioned by the Department of Education, has found that the prevalence of pupil absenteeism in South African schools is between five and 15percent," the department said yesterday.

While the rate was higher than that of developed countries it was much lower when compared to that of other African countries.

The study said drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and a lack of parental involvement contributed to pupil absenteeism. Based on data collected across the nine provinces, it found that pupil absenteeism was not as significant as that of teacher absenteeism - Sapa
