I'm a transformed being. I have made peace with my God again. I found myself speaking in tongues asking for divine intervention during a boat cruise adventure on Breede River, an unhurried river that smiles seductively at Breede River Lodge a few kilometres from George.
The refined and homely lodge was my abode for a day during an exciting three-day South African Beweries (SAB) Beer Heritage Tour that took place from George all the way to Cape Town.
God attends to prayers, I declare. The speed at which the boat was travelling was so high that I was sure it was going to spew me into the unfathomable Breede River waters. Every time the water kept on giving me a violent smack in the face, it seemed as if the boat was going to overturn and give me my second baptismal. I believe that only the hand of God can keep one attached in a boat running at that speed.
I prayed in a language that only God and the angels in heavens understood. By the time the ride was over, I was spirit-filled and I thanked the driver for the experience that forced me back to the mercy of my Creator.
After the cruise, off we went to the lodge for a private dinner in the Blue Room restaurant. Western Cape folks cook tasty and delicious Afrikaner meals. Everywhere we had stopped for refreshments we ate warm tasty food that has a homely feel. Leila's Arms restaurant was the best. Unlike in most places I've dined in during the tour, the hosts were warm and not begrudging that they were serving a darkie.
Western Cape still suffers from the sickness of racism. In some restaurants some white and coloured folks looked at us like we were alien creatures.
The climax of the trip was when we went to the Rob Roy Hop Farm. We were also taken through SAB Malters, where we were lectured on how to make beer. Next stop was b Harbour Rock Restaurant in Hermanus. We then retired to Cape Town for an overnight stay and a good night's sleep at the Table Bay Hotel.
Early in the morning we went to Newlands Brewery for the plant tour. The highlight of the tour was the beer tasting. Though I am of sober habits, I enjoyed learning about how different beer flavours are made.
