The Paraffin Safety Association has asked all household energy consumers to support the Paraffin Consumer Rights Campaign, which starts tomorrow.
The campaign which startsegin on World Consumer Rights Day, continues until June 1, which is National Paraffin Safety Day.
Managing director of the association, Patrick Kulati, said the main thrust of the campaign would be to mobilise nationwide support for the government to formulate and implement a low-income household energy safety policy.
Kulati said consumers must be able to use any form of energy safely to meet their needs.
Meanwhile, the National Credit Regulator (NCR) has joined a nationwide campaign to create awareness about the rights of borrowers.
The spokesman for the NCR, Peter Setou, said: "Most South Africans are dependent on loans and other forms of credit. Lack of awareness about their rights makes consumers vulnerable to unfair lending practices."
He said the regulator would intensify its campaign to reach more consumers. Setou reminded consumers of some of their rights:
l When entering into a credit agreement, you must receive documentation regarding the agreement.
l A credit provider must provide you with a quotation before you sign the credit agreement.
l You have the right to receive information and documents in plain language.
l Do not sign unless you understand the terms and conditions.
l Information about you must be kept confidential.
l You have the right to a copy of your credit record from credit bureaux when you ask for it.
