The students representative council at the Mangosuthu University of Technology has welcomed management's decision to reopen the university, but threatened to go back to the streets if their demands were still not addressed.

The South African Democratic Student Movement-led SRC was excluded from a meeting held on Monday, where a decision to reopen the university next Monday was taken.

SRC president Brian Masondo yesterday said management had better have tangible plans on how the students' grievances will be addressed by the time the university reopens on Monday.

"We welcome the decision to reopen the university, but we are not about to let it go so easily," Masondo said.

"If we find that more lecturers have not been employed, and the rest of the problems that made us go on strike are still there, we will continue with the strike."

He urged students to return to campus and get ready for more protests if their grievances were still not addressed.

University management claimed that the SRC did not ask for a meeting to discuss their grievances.

"From management's point of view the issues were not so serious as to lead to a strike," said spokesman Sandile Zondi.

He said the university was closed after students insisted that their suspended counterparts be reinstated.

"We could not do that," Zondi said. "The decision against the suspended students stands."
