Golf, a game once regarded as a white or rich man's sport, is fast making major inroads in underprivileged communities.

A number of youngsters are quietly making their mark in the game, which is an indication that with substantial sponsorship, more young black golfers can make it to the top.

A few black professional golfers take part in tournaments on the Sunshine Tour and it is evident that they are all working hard to improve their game and qualify for the order of merit.

One such player is James Kamte, who is also doing well in international tournaments. There is now a growing support for golf development in Gauteng East (Ekurhuleni).

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) has recognised the need for a strong programme in the region and is working with a number of local clubs to grow the game in areas such as Springs and Daveyton.

Daveyton Golf Club, Springs Golf Club and Benoni Country Club have all pledged their support to the development programme by offering free rounds for players from the development programme.

ERPM has also discounted its green fees for SAGDB youngsters.

The board's manager for Gauteng East, Thenjiwe Sithole, said clubs were willing to play a meaningful role in developing the game.

She is working with the region's junior golf foundation to facilitate close interaction with local clubs.

Sithole is also anticipating support from the new Ebotse Golf Club in Benoni.

The club has committed itself to mentoring five talented boys from the SAGDB's programme by providing added support in both golf development and life skills.
