The winners of the 2007 National Schools Essay Competition on Albinism will be announced in Mamelodi, Pretoria, next Thursday.

The competition, which started in 2002, is an annual collaborative initiative of the Albinism Society of South Africa, the Health Department, the Development Bank of Southern Africa, Sowetan, Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation, the Southern African Inherited Disorders Association and Transnet.

Targeting pupils in grades 10 to 12, the competition encourages pupils to demystify albinism among the youth, the most impressionable component of the population, to write on:

l Albinism - Experiences of a teenager with albinism;

l Albinism - How do I relate to people with albinism;

l Albinism - Being different in my community; and

l Albinism - A disability or not?

Albinism is common and yet grossly misunderstood in many communities. It is an inherited condition where a person lacks pigmentation or is unable to produce normal colouring of the skin, hair and eyes.
