Bid to oust three Pro-Mbeki premiers

Eric Naki, Elisha Molefe and Frank Maponya

ANC structures aligned to new-elected party president Jacob Zuma have begun flexing their muscles and allegedly want Thabo Mbeki-supporting premiers to go.

However, Luthuli House says these structures do not have the greenlight from the executive to carry this out.

The party's structures in Limpopo, North West and Eastern Cape are said to be trying to find fault with the current premiers' administrations in a bid to remove them.

This goes against secretary-general Gwede Mantashe's warning against the purging of people perceived to be Mbeki supporters.

In North West, the MK Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) has moved to ensure that Premier Edna Molewa is ousted from the provincial leadership for refusing to support Thandi Modise, new ANC deputy secretary-general prior to Limpopo.

The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in Limpopo wants Premier Sello Moloto out.

It has pledged to lobby branches to make sure that Moloto is voted out as ANC chairman.

Some ANC leaders in Eastern Cape have expressed concern about the move by the OR Tambo regional leadership to assess the performance of Premier Nosimo Balindlela and her executive.

ANC spokesman Tiyani Rikhotso said premiers are appointed by the President in consultation with the provincial executive committee.

He also added that provincial chairmen are elected by provincial conferences and it was only these conferences which can get rid of them.
