Elite must not lose sting

The shameful debacle involving the cops and Gauteng Scorpions chief Gerrie Nel shows just why the elite crime-fighting force should not be incorporated into the police.

The shameful debacle involving the cops and Gauteng Scorpions chief Gerrie Nel shows just why the elite crime-fighting force should not be incorporated into the police.

Nel heads the investigation into national police commissioner Jackie Selebi.

As soon as the top cop got wind of his imminent arrest his attack poodles swooped on Nel to arrest him on trumped-up charges.

Well, the prosecutor yesterday refused to press charges against Nel.

The fiasco left South Africa's battered crimefighting reputation in tatters.

Ironically, the Zumites who demand that the Scorpions be folded into the SAPS are the very folks who declaim so loudly against state institutions being used to fight political battles.

Selebi's strike force could not have provided any more blatant an example of that with their clear attempt to intimidate the lawman pursuing their boss for corruption.

The latest allegations against Selebi reinforce previous allegations that the police force is corrupt and inefficient from the top down.

No wonder they and their ANC allies want to bring down the one force that has shown itself willing and capable of pursuing corrupt bigwigs wherever they might be.

This nation cannot afford to lose the Scorpions within the bowels of the ineffective SAPS - no matter where the call might come from.
