Ten ANC Youth League (ANCYL) members in the Nelson Mandela region have been expelled and 40 suspended after displaying Thabo Mbeki banners at a rally addressed by ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma recently.

The expelled youth claimed victimisation by the league's regional leadership after they wore ANC T-shirts and carried banners bearing Mbeki's face instead of Jacob Zuma's "100% Zulu-boy" T-shirts.

Expelled regional ANCYL executive member Nqaba Bhanga said after they received letters of expulsion on December 3 they "refuse to be expelled".

In a statement yesterday, Bhanga said certain league members are facing viciousness and brutality from the league's NEC and national leadership throughout the country.

"We are concerned about the abuse of power by the NEC of the ANCYL though elimination of dissenting views in the movement. Youth league members from various provinces hve bee nexpelled or suspended utilising regional, provincial and national structures," said Bhanga.

He accused the league of undermining the fact that Mbeki is still the ANC president and he remained the organisation's face during mobilisation. All T-shirts, posters and other marketing material should bear his name or face.

"The current scenario in the ANCYL is that if you support the presidency of Mbeki you are expelled or suspended."

Bhanga said they have written a formal letter to the ANC national executive committee and general secretary Kgalema Motlanthe and the Eastern Cape provincial and regional leadership to intervene before the weekend national conference.

But ANCYL regional chairman, Andile Lungisa, has denied allegations saying the group were expelled on the basis that they disrupted a rally of the ANCYL. It's not an issue of T-shirts.

The ten were excluded from the league's 68-member delegation to the ANC national conference. Those excluded are Nkuhlu, Phola Xotongo, Thembisa July, Funeka Mpetha, Archie Lucas, Thami Msomi, Harris Rikhotso, Jabu Mfusi, Garreth Bezuidenhout and Thabo Matiwane.

ANCYL national spokesman Zizi Kodwa has rejected Matiwane's suggestion that the ten were excluded. He said the selection of the league's delegation was done through elections.
