Police have launched a search for the suspects who allegedly stabbed a 17-year-old mother and kidnapped her new-born baby girl on Tuesday.

Nokubonga Khuzwayo of Amandawe near Scottburgh, on the south coast, was lured by three suspects, a man and two women, to a sugar-cane field where she was repeatedly stabbed and left for dead.

Her baby, Owami, was kidnapped but rescued by police and reunited with her grandmother several hours later.

Khuzwayo remains in a critical condition at Port Shepstone Hospital.

Police investigations revealed that a girlfriend desperate to prove her phantom pregnancy to her boyfriend and his family was responsible for the stabbing and kidnapping.

She told the family that the baby was born in mid-November.

She is on the run. Her two accomplices are also being sought by police.

Captain Vincent Pandarum said Khuzwayo and her baby were approached by a woman outside the JG Crookes Hospital.

After enticing the new mother on a non-existent milk deal, both mother and child were taken to a waiting vehicle.

"A woman, aged about 23, led the mother to a brown Audi where another woman and a man were waiting.

"They drove to nearby Malangeni and pulled over at a dense plantation.

"The suspect pointed out a house where she said the victim could obtain the baby's milk, and while she was distracted, one of the women stabbed her repeatedly.

"She was left for dead. She was spotted by passers-by who rushed her to hospital."

Before passing out, Khuzwayo informed her rescuers of her ordeal and her missing baby, said Pandarum. She also gave them her family's phone number.

Police investigations led them to the house of the suspect's boyfriend.

"It is alleged that the suspect was desperate for a child as she had misled her boyfriend into believing that she had been pregnant. While the boyfriend's family was celebrating the baby's arrival the suspect slipped away after noticing the police patrol vehicle."
