How to look good in jeans

Almost every woman owns a pair of jeans, but finding one that fits perfectly still remains a challenge.

Almost every woman owns a pair of jeans, but finding one that fits perfectly still remains a challenge.

"Finding jeans that make us look slimmer and confident is often harder than choosing a bikini. Knowing your body can help narrow down the choices, and make your search for the perfect jeans more manageable," says image couch China Mngomezulu.

Mngomezulu says when buying any pair of jeans it is important to consider the shape and not so much the size.

"Each style of jeans is made for a particular body type and sizes can vary from brand to brand," she says, adding that it is possible to find perfect jeans no matter the size or body shape.

How to find that perfect fit:

For petite women

Go for brands with shorter seams. As long as the jeans are straight leg, and not boot cut, they can be shortened and re-hemmed with the same gold stitching without destroying the shape of the jeans.

"Stay away from cuffed jeans (turn up). They will only make you look shorter," says Mngomezulu.

Women with tummy troubles

Boot-cut jeans can help to balance out a heavier mid-section. Ensure that the jeans hit across the belly, not above or below it.

The width of trouser leg jeans can also help create a more balanced body line.

Women with large hips

Women with wide hips should stick with mid-rise jeans that are slightly on the lower side in order to fit around the widest part without creating love handles.

Look for a straight leg or a trouser leg which falls down from the hips to create a longer-looking leg line.

Women with big hips usually have thicker legs. Straight-leg jeans help give the leg a uniform width.

Women with butts

There are jeans that are made with a lower rise in the front and a higher rise in the back to accommodate women with a larger butt.

"Stay away from any kind of flap pocket or pockets with heavy embellishment or embroidery. They only call attention to your butt," Mngomezulu says.

Instead, look for smaller or angled pockets to help camouflage and flatter your backside."

Women with flat butts

Look for jeans with flap pockets, heavy embellishment or embroidery. Jeans with slightly higher back pockets can also help make the butt look lifted.

Top-heavy women

For top-heavy women, almost any brand will do. Just be sure to choose jeans that have a lighter wash.

Some bleaching on the leg helps add volume to the lower half without adding actual bulk and help balance the body line.

Looking stylish

At the office

Always opt for trouser jeans; they have a wider waistband and a fuller cut leg which makes them look more polished.

On weekends

Opt for faded jeans; which are more casual and relaxed.

For an evening out

Choose a dark colour with a straight cut.
