A member of a notorious gang suspected of carrying out armed robberies across the south of Johannesburg spent the night hiding in a ditch, bleeding from a bullet wound to his knee in a vain attempt to avoid jail.

Police found the man yesterday morning. He was still bleeding.

The suspect was allegedly part of a gang that robbed the Pick 'n Pay supermarket in Mulbarton on Sunday night.

Captain Julie Classen said police received a call from a resident about an armed robbery at the supermarket.

"When police arrived there they found the robbers still at the scene. They shot one man dead, arrested another and shot one in the knee. He managed to escape though he was injured. The other robbers fled and are still at large," she said.

Classen said the police returned to the scene yesterday morning and noticed blood trails leading to a nearby bush. They followed the trail and found the man they had shot the previous night hiding in a ditch near Southgate Mall.

"He was arrested and is in hospital under police guard. We are still looking for the other robbers and urge the community to assist us in apprehending them," she said.

The robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and valuables.
