Ten inmates from Boksburg Correctional Services were among the 56 graduates who received certificates at the gradings held at the prison in Ekurhuleni on Saturday.
The successful inmates were Melvin Diko, Lando Alfonso, Ronnie Nyembe, Isaac Mokwena, Isaac Mokwena, Abel Nune, Michael Radzilani and Thulani Mlambo. They all got their first blue belts.
Others were Rocky Mandlazi (first yellow belt), Bhekani Mnyandu (second yellow) and Arthurliah Magabela (second brown).
The event, which was fascinating and well attended, was organised by Karate Organisation of South Africa in conjunction with Ekurhuleni Kyokushinkai Karate Association (Matsushima).
The inmates were presented with International Karate Organisation member cards, which means they are recognised internationally.
