Police technology played itself out against a man wanted for six counts of murder and another wanted for rape in Kagiso on the West Rand at the weekend.

The two were part of a six-member gang that allegedly robbed and killed a woman on Friday morning in Dobsonville, Soweto.

They had skipped bail and had continued to terrorise the community with their criminal activities before the police finally pounced on them.

Metro police spokesman Wayne Minnaar said the two wanted men had been arrested and charged for their crimes but had managed to stay under the police radar.

"We were able to identify them because they were on our records.

"We checked their names and ID numbers and discovered that they were the wanted men," said Minnaar.

On Friday the men and their four associates tried to rob the Soweto woman, but shot her three times after a scuffle broke out. She died at the scene.

The five men and one woman are in custody and will appear in the Roodepoort magistrates' court on a murder charge, police said.
