A Mpumalanga school principal is facing charges of culpable homicide after the car he was driving allegedly hit a child from a neighbouring school, killing her instantly.

The incident happened at about 8am on a busy road in Marapyane, North West, yesterday.

Five-year-old Rachel Kafong died instantly after sustaining severe head and other injuries after she was hit by the speeding car.

She was a Grade R pupil at Sebisi Primary School in Marapyane.

Witnesses say the girl, who was with friends at the time of the accident, was trying to cross the road to get to a shop on the other side.

"Her friends had crossed first and the girl tried to follow them. While she was in the middle of the road, a speeding car turned into the lane she was in from an adjoining one," said a witness at the accident scene who refused to be identified.

"The girl's friends, who were already on the other side of the road, were flung across the road. They watched helplessly as the speeding car hit their little friend.

"The girl hit the road with a thud and collapsed. She lay there in a pool of blood."

She sustained severe head and other injuries.

"The other girls, luckily, escaped serious injury. The car stopped and the driver stepped out to check on the girl who was under the vehicle," said the witness.

"This road is very busy. I don't understand how the principal hit the child," the witness added.

The girl was declared dead by paramedics who arrived at the scene.

The driver has been identified as a school principal from Lefiso village.

He cannot be named until he has appeared in court.

The principal yesterday declined to comment when Sowetan contacted him.

"I am still in shock and I would not like to think or talk about the incident," he said.

Police spokesman Constable Hastings Chaane confirmed the incident and said the school head would appear in court soon on a charge of culpable homicide.
