Three friends went to a dam to swim at the weekend to beat the summer's heat, but two emerged from water to find their friend missing.
The 13-year-old boy had drowned in the dam near his home in Tsepisong, Soweto.
Johannesburg Emergency Services personnel searched for the body, but could not find it.
Police later recovered the body.
West Rand police spokesman S'phiwe Ndlovu said the search lasted for about two hours. Police have opened an inquest docket.
