A member of the SAPS Crime Prevention Unit has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing an unknown man at a petrol station in Ladysmith, in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
The off-duty police officer and the member of the public were allegedly involved in an argument before the shooting at midnight on Sunday.
Police spokesman Captain Charmaine Struwig said police are investigating a case of murder against their colleague.
"The police officer has opened a case of attempted murder wherein he alleges that the deceased assaulted him and attempted to kill him.
The deceased suffered several gunshot wounds to the body, while the police officer suffered an open wound to the head," she said.
Struwig said two firearms, one in possession of the deceased, and the other in that of the police, were recovered at the scene along with several spent cartridges.
The officer is expected to appear in the Ladysmith magis- trate's court later this week on charges of murder.
The deceased has not yet been identified. Police urged members of the public who think he might be their loved one, to identify the body.
