Mzonke Fana and Simphiwe Vetyeka should retain their IBF junior lightweight and South African bantamweight belts against Javier Alvarez and Ebenezer Tumane tonight.

The fights will be promoted by Branco Sports Production in association with the North West sports department and Matlosana Municipality, at the Banquet Hall in Klerksdorp. SABC has guaranteed live coverage of the Fana-Alvarez fight on Blow by Blow at 10pm.

The "Rose of Khayelitsha" will bid for the first defence of the belt he won from Malcolm Klassen in April while Vetyeka will bid for the sixth defence of the title he won against Khulile Makeba in 2005.

Vetyeka, who lost to WBC champion Hozumi Hasegawa in May after 16 straight wins, should sweep the Free Stater aside. Tumane, 36, is past his sell-by date. He has an uninspiring fight record of 12 losses and 14 wins.

Fana should have a tougher fight against the vastly experienced Argentinian who promised to end Fana's reign in six rounds.

Alvarez, the former WBU, South American and WBO Latino lightweight champion who is known as "El Vikingo", has flattened 16 of his 34 victims from 41 fights. He was sent to slumberland twice in his six losses.

Alvarez threatened to hang up his gloves if he failed to unseat Fana, who has 26 wins (nine knockouts) and three losses. But the last Argentinian to win in South Africa was Victor Galindez in 1976.

Alfred Buqwana and Deon Dwarte will be among the officials for the Fana-Alvarez fight.

The others are William Lerch of the US and Giustino Di Giovanni of Italy. Louis Priluker of the US will be fight supervisor.
