BANGKOK - The 24th World Student Games ended on Saturday night with Team South Africa 32nd on the medal podium after winning four medals - one gold, two silver and one bronze.

China were on top with 32 gold medals, 29 silver and 26 bronze, with Russia second on 28 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. The United States were eighth on 10 gold, 10 silver and 14 bronze.

Morocco were 23rd with two gold medals and one silver.

The only gold medal for South Africa was won by Petrus Koekemoer in the 400m hurdles. Leigh Julius won a silver in the 200m, with the other one coming from the 4 x 100m relay team.

Stephen Mokoka grabbed bronze in the men's 10 000m on his debut. In soccer, South Africa finished 12th after losing 4-3 to Poland on Friday.

Mbulaheni Nematandani, Team South Africa chef de mission, praised the athletics team for their consistency in bringing back the medals from the World Student Games.

"We have always done well in athletics at the competition, I think what we need to do is to rope in more technical expertise from the federations in all the team sports in the build-up to the competition," said Nematandani.

Meanwhile, up-and-coming Seshego softballer Julia Mashamaite become an instant celebrity in Bangkok. Mashamaite was chosen by the Federation of International University Sports (Fisu) to extinguish the flame of the World Student Games during the closing ceremony.
