Students at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) have vowed to oppose the proposed doubling of certain fees.

The students have threatened to disrupt lectures and the registration of semester students on Monday if management implements the proposed 100percent hikes in registration, accommodation and tuition fees.

Student representative council spokesman Mthunzi Gumede said the increases would mean that the registration fee would go up from R2000 to R4000 for fulltime students and from R1000 to R2000 for semester students.

Talks between the student representative council and management deadlocked on Tuesday.

"We will not agree on any figure, the increase will impact negatively on poor students who are struggling to pay," said Gumede.

He said students rejected management's decision to increase fees.

He said if there was to be any fee adjustment, it should be a reduction so as to accommodate struggling students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

DUT management was not available for comment.

The students earlier this year went on strike in protest against hikes in registration fees. They demanded the release of students' results whose accounts were in arrears.

The strike was called off after management agreed to release the results and allowed students to register.
