Cosatu's KwaZulu-Natal secretary Zet Luzipho has received death threats.

The reason is that he has to pronounce on the federation's provincial position on key issues including its choice for ANC president.

On Monday Cosatu announced that it had hired private security to guard Luzipho after he had received death threats.

Yesterday the federation's deputy president S'dumo Dlamini told Sowetan they were certain that the threats were politically motivated.

"Zet is tasked with pronouncing on key issues affecting the federation. Public debates in the media refer to several issues including the succession debate and he is the one who must announce these decisions.

"I am in the process of compiling a document on these and other matters, which we will hand to the police."

He said Cosatu had taken the necessary measures to protect Luzipho.

When contacted by Sowetan, Luzipho said the issue regarding his security was being dealt with at the federation's national level.

"I wish I could say more but I can't," he said.
