The Polokwane Municipality has embarked on a wide scale drive to beautify the city and its surrounding areas ahead of the 2010 World Cup.
Thabo Makunyane, the executive mayor of the Limpopo municipality, said the project was part of the R12,8 million urban renewal.
"We've already started with the project to make our municipality beautiful. We will start seeing more visible structures in the not too distant future.
"The beautifying of the municipality is scheduled to finish by the end of June next year. All the streets will also be paved," said Makunyane.
"The streets of the municipality are going to be attractive, not only to the locals but also to the thousands of tourists who will be visiting our shores.
"There will also be cycle and pedestrian tracks, linking the various main routes into the central business district of Polokwane.
"It will also make the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex accessible to all people, be it those who are pedestrians, use cycles, motor bikes or vehicles.
"We are also going to improve our roads," said Makunyane, whose municipality is building the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex with the assistance of the Limpopo government.
The national department of transport has set aside R160 million to upgrade roads.
Part of it will also be used to upgrade the Polokwane Centre bus terminus and taxi ranks in the municipality.
