ACCRA - Ghana midfielder Michael Essien, pictured, received his 2006 BBC African Footballer of the Year award during an impressive ceremony in Accra last week.
The Chelsea ace was presented with the award by three-time African Footballer of the Year Abedi "Pele" Ayew. Essien beat Al Ahly and Egypt playmaker Mohamed Aboutrika and Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba in the fans' vote. Essien said: "I can't express how happy I am today to receive this coveted award." - BBC
