The names of "political legends" born in the OR Tambo district municipality in Eastern Cape will be used to help market the area globally, it was revealed yesterday.
The politicians, to be known as "OR Tambo Ambassadors", include the likes of former President Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Bantu Holomisa.
Municipal spokesman Ayabulela Ngoqo said the families of the political drawcards met with executive mayor Zoleka Capa, to discuss the initiative. He said the "fame and influence" of the icons will be used to attract tourists and investors to the area.
"The municipality felt it was time they assisted in the area's economic development by exploiting investment opportunities in the area," he said.
