Benoni Premier United grabbed a valuable point when they played to a goalless draw with Mamelodi Sundowns in a Castle Premiership match at Germiston Stadium yesterday.
The home side only have themselves to blame after squandering several scoring opportunities against the league champions.
Sundowns seemed to have been storing their energy for Wednesday night's final league game against Jomo Cosmos where they will be crowed the champions.
"Half a loaf is better than nothing. Our plan was to get all the points in this game," said a relived Dumisani Ndlovu, owner of the Rabbits.
"We now need to get a win against Lamontville Golden Arrows in the last match to secure our position in the Premiership."
The home side, guided by Sonas Malope, needed a win to avoid featuring in the Mvela Golden League Platinum playoffs.
The goal-shy Rabbits will be away in Durban on Saturday for a battle with Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium at 3.15pm.
While Arrows are safe from the playoffs, neighbours AmaZulu will be crossing their fingers that the Lamontville- based side wins the Umlazi match.
AmaZulu, who are also in danger of featuring in the playoffs, play Ajax Cape Town at Athlone Stadium on the same day at the same time.
Meanwhile, Sundowns travel to Tunisia on Thursday for a return Confederations Cup match against El Gaouafel Sportif de Gafsa. The South African side, who won the first leg match 2-1 at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane two weeks ago, are adamant that they will beat their opponents again. - Sowetan
