TEHRAN- Hundreds of Iranians demonstrated in Tehran yesterday to mark May Day, the Ilna news service reported.
But the workers, who had converged at a stadium in central Tehran, were dispersed by anti-riot police when the march moved out into the streets, witnesses said.
Scuffles occurred when the police dispersed the protestors. The marchers were ordered to disperse after they moved into the street outside the stadium in the south of Haft-e Tir Square.
"About 600 workers demonstrated at the exit of the stadium and shouted slogans against the minister of labour," reported Ilna.
"Incapable minister, Resign", "Government, parliament, stop your slogans and act", and "Death to the oppressors", the marchers shouted. They hoisted a coffin aloft and fought back when police tried to break it.
The demonstrators dispersed without major clashes. - Sapa-AFP
