Two trainee sangomas from Mpumalanga could be forced to discontinue their training after they were conned into having sex with two men who convinced them that it was part of their training.

Sex for trainee sangomas is forbidden during the training period which could take between one and five years.

Police said the women, aged 21 and 28, were raped by two men who told them that it was part of the formal training procedure.

Inspector Veli Semenya said the suspects, aged 27 and 28, approached the victims on Saturday night when their trainer was attending a relative's funeral in Vaalbank.

"They first asked them out for dinner, saying that it was part of the training and they themselves were qualified sangomas," Semenya said.

On their way, Semenya said, the two men told the victims that they could not complete their training if they did not have sex with them.

The victims were allegedly raped in the bushes at Phake village near Mmametlhake in the KwaMhlanga area of Mpumalanga.

After realising that the men had fooled them, the student sangomas pressed rape charges against the two men, who were then arrested.

The suspects were not asked to plead when they appeared in the Temba magistrates' court in Hamanskraal on Monday.

Their case was postponed to next week for further police investigations

Mzilikazi Masiya, president of the council for Independent Traditional and Apostolic Churches in Pretoria, said a cleansing ceremony was required for the two students to continue with their training.
