The number of malaria cases as well as deaths caused by it have dropped in the past seven years, the Mpumalanga Health Department said this week.
The department said that since 2000, there had been a "pleasing decline" in malaria cases and deaths according to statistics.
In 2000 there were 12753 cases and 20 deaths. In this year's high-transmission season, which ended last month, there were 1786 cases with seven deaths.
Mpumalanga, together with KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo, face the greatest challenge of malaria.
Mpho Gabashane, department spokesman, said to effect more coordination of strategies to fight malaria, they had put in place a Lubombo spatial development initiative plan.
They brought the three provinces on board, together with Mozambique and Swaziland.
"The plan ensures information sharing and the results bear testimony to the initiative.
"Communities are also empowered with information to report at health centres early when they suspect signs and symptoms of malaria," Gabashane said.
