Gauteng is well on track with preparations for the 2010 World Cup that will also ensure that South Africans benefit immensely from the spin-offs.

This was said by Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa in Kempton Park yesterday at the launch of the provincial 2010 strategic framework plan.

Shilowa said the ongoing infrastructure developments in the province will have long- term spin-offs for the residents of Gauteng.

"Projects to supply water and electricity in the vicinity of match stadia and practice venues will improve access to these basic services for communities in the surrounds of these facilities and other areas," he said.

"We are also working with the department of public enterprise and Infranco to explore the possibility of establishing a media centre at Nasrec in time for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

"Of prime importance for us is to ensure the inclusion of the marginalised sections of our society, the youth, the disabled in all the 2010 related activities. Specific attention will also be given to ensuring that all new and upgraded infrastructure is designed to ensure easy access for people with disabilities.

"With Gauteng being the main port of entry and home to the Fifa headquarters, the spotlight on South Africa will also be focussed on our province.

"Gauteng is ready to make South Africa win with the whole of Africa," said Shilowa, adding that the many South Africans will also benefit from the World Cup in terms of employment.
