upgrading maths and science skills

lIn 2001, the education department launched the Dinaledi schools initiative in order to fast-track the acquisition of maths and science skills. There are currently 400 of these high schools across the country, offering maths and science at higher grade level byqualified teachers.

lThe Dinaledi project aims to increase access to mathematics, science and technology and to promote and improve results for these subjects in underprivileged communities.

l Ten of the Dinaledi schools were recently awarded for their excellence in maths at the Most Improved School Awards.

l Education Minister Naledi Pandor said that advances in technology meant that learners needed to continually upgrade their skills to meet the demands of a changing world.

lThe department aims to keep competent teachers and to encourage new teachers into public education, through a programme of incentives that include bursaries and rewards.
