Church jail for young attacker

Victor Hlungwani

A grade 12 pupil in Limpopo, who attacked his principal with a garden fork, has been sentenced to attend the local church under the supervision of the pastor.

Magistrate Daniel Maluleke of the Malamulele magistrates' court asked the teenager's father to choose a church for his son, who had gone to school drunk on Valentine's Day.

The pupil had waited outside the principal's office with the garden fork and attacked him when he came out.

The 17-year-old pupil - of Yingwani High School in Dumela village near Giyani - pleaded guilty to assaulting Justice Maluleke.

The court ruled that he attend the Apostolic Faith Mission Church and greet the pastor before and after church services. He may also not be absent from church without informing the pastor.
