Smoking is against the laws of God.
This is the view of Theda Leonie, of the 300000-strong Seventh Day Adventist Church.
He was speaking in parliament in a presentation in support of the controversial Tobacco Products Control Amendment Bill, whose sponsors want to toughen the anti-smoking laws. The bill proposes to further curtail the marketing of tobacco products. It will also close loopholes that have allowed tobacco companies to organise nightclub and beach party events for smokers only.
If the bill is passed, smokers will break the law if they smoke close in doorways or close to the windows of public buildings. The penalty for "illegal smoking' will be a fine of up to R50 000. Companies that allow illegal smoking can be fined R1million.
