One of the widows of Shangaan disco king Peta Teanat is making a name for herself in music.

Vuyelwa, whose real name is Gladys Mapitlula, recently received a R10000 prize, a certificate and a trophy after being voted best female artist at the Munghana Lonene FM Xitsonga Music awards at the Giyani Community Hall.

The song that won her the acclaim was Papa Mfana, from her CD Vuyelwa Volume 11.

It was released under her own label, VGM Records, which she started two years ago.

An elated Vuyelwa said the death of her husband had devastated her so she took a two-year break from music and did not record an album until 1999.

But record companies ignored her songs so she was forced to resort to self-marketing.

"My songs are voted for by listeners and this means that this genre of music is still popular.

"We sell well when we go out and market the music.

"On the latest CD, on some of the tracks, the keyboard is played by me."

Peta Teanat died in 1997 after being stabbed by an off-duty policeman.
