In a day of high drama the Independent Democrats have joined the Democratic Alliance to govern Cape Town, rejecting the ANC's bid for a coalition to oust mayor Helen Zille, pictured right.

ID city caucus leader Simon Grindrod said yesterday that the deal was struck to ensure stability in Cape Town.

The deal was apparently concluded earlier in the week after it became clear that the African Muslim Party had been negotiating with the ANC.

Zille axed the three AMP members from the coalition on Tuesday.

The ID had initially rejected Zille's overtures after the March 1 local government elections and sided with the ANC. The move had angered a number of ID members.

Flanked by ID leader Patricia De Lille, Grindrod said yesterday the memories of a divided and chaotic Cape Town city government had motivated the decision taken by the party's caucus.
