The construction and upgrading of stadiums in preparation for the 2010 Fifa World Cup starts in earnest next month.

The host stadiums should be ready for the Confederations Cup that will be played in 2009 - a dress rehearsal for Fifa's showpiece.

Stadiums that have been demolished and are being rebuilt are Orlando Stadium and Kings Park in Durban.

The controversial Green Point Stadium in Cape Town is another that will be rebuilt following the decision of MEC for environmental affairs Tasneem Essop.

Construction on the 43000-seater Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit gets under way next month.

Those that are being or are going to be upgraded are HM Pitje in Mamelodi, Rand Stadium in Johannesburg, Dobsonville Stadium, Sinaba in Daveyton and George Thabe in Sharpeville.

"Construction has already started at these above-mentioned stadiums," said Premier Soccer League chief operating officer Ronnie Schloss this week.
