Businessmen threw a party for thousands of prisoners on Sunday.

The party, at Losperfontein in North West, was attended by the police, members of the mayoral committee of the municipality of Madibeng and businesspeople.

The party was part of local commerce's initiative against crime.

It was organised by Simon Boikanyo, of Boikanyo Funeral Home, in Letlhabile, and the executive mayor of Madibeng, Sophie Molokoane-Machika.

Guests were enthralled by the prisoners' songs and exciting dancing.

Abraham Makgopela, 55, who was imprisoned for about five years and became a preacher in the cells, related stories of crime.

Makgopela, now released, has become a preacher and is a leader of his church.

Molokoane-Machika and Molefi Sefularo, a member of parliament, received gifts from the prisoners.

A few thousand prisoners, among them men jailed for armed robbery, rape and burglary, joined the celebrations and for a few hours were able to enjoy themselves.
