The Diepsloot Athletics Club (DAC) has embarked on an ambitious recruitment drive which is aimed at women.
"The lack of enough participation by women in the sport in all it's spheres is a cause for concern, not only for us in Diepsloot but throughout the country," said Puleng Nyaile, chairman of DAC.
"We have a total of 50 members and of those only 15 are women. It's not as bad as compared to other clubs, but we need a gender equity.
"The first thing that we are going to do is to target schools and creches. We want to start with them [the children] when they are still young.
"We want to make it an all inclusive process by also recruiting our sisters, aunts, mothers and grandmothers into the sport.
"We are well aware that there is a big challenge of culture. Some of our sisters have pressure from their husbands when it comes to [wearing] running gear.
"What we are saying to them is that some of them can use tights and any other apparel that makes them comfortable when they are on the track in line with their culture."
Nyaile said they wanted some of the girls and women in Diepsloot to serve as office bearers and marshals of the club that was formed in 1989.
l The Malcolm X Athletics Club will stage a 10km road race in Vosloorus on Saturday.
On the same day, the Vodacom Heroes Marathon will be run from Madiba's house in Qunu at 6am to Umtata.
