Home Affairs is an important link in the fight against crime and terrorism. But given the ongoing media reports about corruption in the department, one can only conclude that it is not efficient at all.
There might be terrorist cells in our country. Terrorists were able to infiltrate the US, the UK and Spain - countries that pride themselves on first-class intelligence services and efficient government departments.
It is time Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, stopped making excuses and started taking action. The first step should be to get rid of officials involved in corruption.
CCTV cameras should be installed at Home Affairs and manned by independent, capable agencies that should watch for irregular activities.
In addition, all prospective employees should go through stringent interviews and the National Intelligence Agency should be brought in to screen every application. Employees should declare their interests outside of the department.
The ANC has proved itself very inefficient in handling this problem. There is a lack of urgency in dealing with it and the country is suffering the consequences of this ineptitude. Current problems are always blamed on apartheid. This is ridiculous because the ANC has been governing for 12 years.
Minister, please stop the rot in your department.
