Users need only contact their new service to request a port. Your old service provider has to reply within an hour of receiving the request, then your new service provider will ask you on which date the port should take place.
Prepaid customers will have to buy a starter pack for the new network. You then phone that network and tell them that you want to port. This can be done entirely over the phone.
All the networks have indicated that they will pick up the costs of porting.
Contract subscribers can change networks even if their contract has not expired. But the existing contract will have to be cancelled first. You will still have to pay your monthly subscription or make a single payment to terminate the contract.
Networks can refuse a port. The reasons for a refusal will be made known to the user.
This new technology will make for stiff competition, which could mean lower prices for cellphone users.
