First and foremost, living with HIV is not glamorous.
It is therefore disturbing that poor people are deliberately infecting themselves with HIV-positive blood to receive monthly government grants.
The startling disclosure was made by Eastern Cape social development MEC Toko Xas in Keiskammahoek this week.
People infecting themselves to access the monthly grants are defeating the government's objective to stop the spread of the disease.
Living with HIV is not a disability. It is an incurable infection. Now it is being seen as a means to access monthly government grants.
The government should move swiftly to alleviate the plight of the poor and avert this looming catastrophe.
