Police are looking for the mother of a two-year-old girl who was found on a river bank in Ezibayeni in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

The baby was found by a group of girls who had gone to the river to fetch water.

They found the baby sitting behind one of the drums left near the river to store rainwater.

It is not known how long the baby had been left alone on the river bank.

Police spokesman Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the baby was shown to people living in nearby houses but none of the residents knew her.

"Because it was pensioners' pay day, the police took the child to the pension point hoping to find someone who might know her, but no one did," Mdletshe said.

The baby is being cared for by the family of one of the girls who found her.

Mdletshe said the girls had tried speaking to the baby but she did not respond.

Anyone with information that might help the police and the foster family to discover the baby's identity should contact the Ezibayeni police station's commissioner, Captain Sboniso Mtshali, on 035-562-1072 or 082-417-8200.
