Violence bars examination

Two candidates on their way to write adult basic education and training examinations never completed the journey. One was raped and the other was shot when their taxi was hijacked in North West. A third candidate escaped unharmed.

Education spokesman Charles Raseala said three students from Temba near Hammanskraal were travelling in a minibus on their way to write their Setswana paper when it was hijacked. The hijackers allegedly beat the male student, shot him in the leg and raped an 18-year-old female student.

Arrangements for a supplementary exam have been made. Temba police were not available for comment. - Elisha Molefe
