NATALIE du Toit's sterling performance at the London Paralympics makes us all proud to be South Africans.

Winning her 12th Gold medal in the Women's 400m freestyle after her magnificent win in the 100m butterfly race is testament that good old hard work and determination are still the good values to espouse in competitive sports.

With 15 medals earned in the past three Paralympics, she is the most successful South African Paralympian and the most decorated athlete of the games.

Few able-bodied athletes can boast such success.

Du Toit is a model ambassador for the country who conducts herself admirably both as an athlete and a role model, in and outside the pool.

She did not let the loss of a leg in a motorbike accident 11 years ago become a burden. She continues to be a universal symbol of hope and retires at the peak of her game.
