We back call for state-owned pharmaceutical company

THE call by the ANC for a state-owned pharmaceutical company is commendable. Medicines remain highly expensive in this country.

With the country having one of the highest recorded HIV-Aids cases in world, the government is currently digging deep in its coffers to procure anti-retrovirals.

It is estimated that South Africa consumes 25 percent of all the ARV's in the world.

Having a state-owned pharmaceutical firm will hopefully go a long way in improving the public's access to these important life-saving drugs.

We are concerned to learn that the number of people tested for HIV-Aids has increased six-fold from two million to 12 million a year .

All this says despite the information they have access to, most South Africans continue to engage in unprotected sex.
