New revelation

IT IS noteworthy that the National Lotteries Board has been in the news in recent months mainly for the wrong reasons.

This is rather unedifying for an organisation given the important mandate of disbursing public funds to social causes needing urgent attention.

Complaints levelled at it by non-governmental organisations have mostly been about long waiting periods before responses to applications by charity organisations for funding are received and controversial decisions relating to the sponsorship of concerts.

The latest revelation that it funded a Cosatu anniversary celebration by R1million will almost certainly spark public outrage and tarnish the board's image further.

Juxtaposed with pressing charity causes, the decision to sponsor the anniversary was highly questionable - if not indefensible.
