Roads woes

THERE is no doubt that the state of the country's roads is in a shambles. You will be hard-pressed to find any piece oftarmac with no potholes on it.

For this, the consumer - in and out of the car - has been paying dearly with anybody, from the street-corner puncture repairs man to the big tyre companies, doing brisk business.

The commuter has been paying for every tyre burst in a taxi or bus, just as the motorist has been digging deeper into his and her pockets.

As if this was not enough, from June the consumer is expected to cough up even more with the introduction of the Open Road Toll System. A pilot project to familiarise road users with a tolled 185km stretch will commence in April and from here the consumer will be bleeding money.

The taxi industry will push their costs down on to the consumer, as will everyone else.
